Pharmacoepidemiology focuses on the utilization and effects of medicines and medical products in select patient populations, with the intent of providing evidence on the safety and efficacy of using therapeutic products in those populations. One of the current challenges in this field is studying the incidence of adverse reactions in response to exposure to different doses of drugs over variable time periods. This presentation will outline the challenges in assessing the joint impact of the use of past and current drugs on health outcomes; introduce new statistical methods to deal with these challenges; and illustrate the ability of these methods to yield new insights in the interpretation of data from longitudinal pharmacoepidemiology studies
